Follow in the footsteps of German-born and widely acclaimed Australian artist, Hans Heysen, visiting some of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes in the Flinders Ranges. This tour is also open to non-painters and is particularly suitable to those who wish to spend more time in one location, taking photos, nature walks or simply relaxing with a book and enjoying these picturesque locations.
Ross Paterson is recognized as one of Australia’s leading and influential watercolourists who is well-respected for his “en-plein-air” paintings in watercolour, oil, and pastel. A multi-award winner in Australia and internationally Ross is one of the few watercolourists invited to represent Australia in world Water Media expositions and Biennials and has had his work published in various books and publications worldwide.
Arrive in Adelaide where you are met by your Aussie Redback Tours team. Straight to Burra for “meet-and-greet” drinks and nibbles with our tutor and other passengers. (Dinner included)
A day of sketching in the lovely copper mining town of Burra. Our tutor will provide sketching tips and advice. (Breakfast & Dinner included)
We head through Jamestown and Hawker to our accommodation for the next four nights at Rawnsley Park Station. In the afternoon we spend time painting this amazing vista under Ross’s guidance. (Breakfast & Dinner included)
We start the day with an opportunity to take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the Flinders Ranges (own expense) before spending the day at Rawnsley Park Station, painting at Station Hill lookout which has uninterrupted views of Rawnsley Bluff, the Chace and Elder ranges. Great subjects for painting. (Breakfast included)
A full day of painting at historic old Blinman, the highest town in South Australia. The town began with the discovery of copper in 1859 and commencement of mining in 1862. It has some lovely old heritage buildings which we’ll be able to paint, and after lunch we’ll have another stop in the Flinders Ranges to paint till it’s time to head back to our accommodation. Today we spend time at Merna Mora, an area steeped in history with many artifacts and evidence of the early days of settlement. Ross will demonstrate how to capture this delightful area in the Flinders Ranges. (Breakfast & Lunch included)
We paint more classic Flinders Ranges scenery today. Ross will choose your location and after a demo on how to capture the scene in front you, you’ll be free to paint for the rest of the day, stopping only for a bite of lunch. (Breakfast & Dinner included)
This morning we travel through Hawker and classic Hans Heysen scenery on the way to our accommodation in Hahndorf. After lunch, you’ll have time to paint in Hahndorf before a farewell dinner tonight when we review of all the work we’ve done this week. (Breakfast & Dinner included)
On the way to the airport, we drop in at The Cedars to see Hans Heysen’s studio (the oldest art studio in Australia). (Breakfast included)
