$3250 pp S/Supp $490. Non-painters take $150 off

Kangaroo Island is one of South Australia’s most unique nature-based travel destinations, with native bushland, diverse wildlife, pristine beaches, local wines, and gorgeous sunsets to enjoy every day. We have put together an art tour that will give you the opportunity to capture much of this whilst relaxing and enjoying a holiday to remember.

Ross Paterson is recognized as one of Australia’s leading and influential watercolourists, oil painters and pastelists who is well-respected for his “en-plein-air” paintings in watercolour, oil, and pastel. A multi-award winner in Australia and internationally Ross is one of the few watercolourists invited to represent Australia in world Water Media expositions and Biennials and has had his work published in various books and publications worldwide.

Day 1

You will be met mid-morning at Adelaide airport by your Aussie Redback Tours team, tutor, and fellow artists and travellers. We travel to Victor Harbor for lunch, then continue to Cape Jervis where we catch the ferry to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island, then drive straight to our accommodation at Kingscote where we enjoy dinner and settle in for the night. (D)

Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, we walk across the road to the foreshore for a quick painting lesson with Ross, then it will be your turn to set up and create your own artwork, capturing the scenes around you. Lunch can be purchased in town, and in the afternoon there will be more opportunities to paint, explore Kingscote, visit art galleries, shops, sketch the locals, or just relaxiby the pool at our motel. Tonight is a “dinner-free” night where you can purchase your own meal in town or at the hotel. (B)

Day 3

We have an early start today, driving across the island to Flinders Chase National Park, starting with a painting opportunity at Remarkable Rocks, one of the most photographed places on Kangaroo Island. The walk to the rocks is easy, but remember to bring a hat and sunscreen. We’ll paint for a couple of hours, then pack up and take a short drive across to Cape Du Coedic Lighthouse, and boardwalk to Admiral’s Arch. The boardwalk is easy but the last few metres down to Admiral’s Arch will test your legs! The view is well worth it though and great for photos. After lunch we continue to Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park in time for koala viewing and a koala holding experience. Note: entry is included however koala holding experience charge is at your own expense. We have dinner together tonight at our hotel.(B,D)

Day 4

After a busy day yesterday, we have a more leisurely pace today. After breakfast we pack up our gear and board the bus to travel to our next stop—American River, named after American sealers who camped in the area in the 1800s. It’s a beautiful spot for painting and you will have a wonderful choice of boats, pelicans, swans, reflections, rocks, and much more to capture in your paintings, under Ross’s guidance, stopping for lunch and check-in at our hotel. The afternoon is free for more painting and relaxing. We have dinner together tonight at the hotel. (B,D)

Day 5

This morning you have the opportunity to capture a typical American River sunrise with its glorious colours over the still water. Spend time, painting and photographing before a late breakfast, then around mid-morning we drive to Penneshaw, the ferry port that we glimpsed briefly when we arrived on Day One.

Besides the ferry port, Penneshaw also features a Maritime and Folk museum, Frenchman’s Rock, quaint little seaside cottages, and nights tours to a colony of little penguins, the only species to breed in Australian waters.

We’ll have lunch in Penneshaw, then spend the afternoon exploring and painting this little town. Tonight is a “dinner-free” night where you can purchase your own meal in town, then later those who wish, can take part in the evening Penguin tour (own expense).  Besides penguins, you will also have the chance to spot wallabies, possums and other seabirds.

After the tour we travel back to our accommodation in American River, for our well-earned rest before our trip home in the morning. (B)

Day 6

Sadly, all good tours must come to an end. This morning we catch the ferry from Penneshaw to Cape Jervis, then travel up the coast to Adelaide, stopping on the way for morning tea and lunch, arriving in time for flight departures at Adelaide airport. (B)
