Mt Augustus – Kennedy Range at Wildflower Time

We travel through classic outback territory to Mt Augustus, one of the most spectacular peaks of the world’s largest monoclines, then travel west to follow the coast through the beautiful towns of Coral Bay, Carnarvon and Kalbarri. As it’s wildflower time, we will no doubt be spoilt with spectacular colours wherever we look.

Day 1

Departing Perth, we start our adventure travelling through the Swan Valley on the Great Northern Highway and arriving at Bindoon for a morning tea stop. We later continue through wheat and sheep country to Dalwallinu, here we enjoy lunch. Onward we reach the tiny settlement of Paynes Find ,we have a comfort stop and then onto Mount Magnet and to the outback town of Cue, our overnight stop. (D)

Day 2

This morning a short drive to Meekatharra and a tour of the town before hitting the dirt road to Mt Augustus. Our first stop on the way is at the Murchison River, a delightful area for bird life and flora and fauna. We collect some firewood here for our camp fire for the next two nights at Mt Augustus, a wonderful experience in the outback. Our next stop on the way is the heritage site of Mt Gould; this is the site of one of Western Australia’s oldest police stations, built in 1880 and has a very interesting story. We next arrive at the Landor Race Track, Races have been held here since 1929 and still continue to run every year in October. We have a look around before heading to our destination and on the way we will experience the wonder of Mt Augustus from a distance, an amazing sight. Then onto our accommodation for a two night stop over at Mt Augustus resort and station. (B, D) (Shared amenities) (ensuited cabins available Extra $100 pn)

Day 3

This morning is all about the rock, Mt Augustus and the lovely Lyons River, which is where Cattle Pool is situated, an absolutely wonderful spot, with its amazing large river gums, birdlife and animals. We enjoy a morning tea here and for those who are game a swim is on offer! Around the rock we stop at various locations to explore Aboriginal art, wonderful rock formations and experience the scent of the bush – it doesn’t get much better. Later we return to our accommodation for lunch and then the afternoon is yours to explore, relax and take in this vast area. In the late afternoon we travel to our sunset viewing area and watch the sun go down on the largest rock in the world, quite a sight to experience, while we enjoy champagne and nibbles. Later back to camp for our evening meal around the campfire. What a truly wonderful day! (B L D)

Day 4

We say goodbye to Mt Augustus and travel the Cobra-Dairy Creek Road.  The scenery is changing fast as we pass cattle stations on the way to the Kennedy Range.  We will stop on the way at a chosen spot to enjoy a cuppa and the scenery of the area, before arriving at Gascoyne Junction, nestled on the banks of the mighty Gascoyne River. Later we cross over the Gascoyne River and have a short drive out to the Range and visit Temple Gorge, and Honeycomb Gorge, returning later to our accommodation at Gascoyne Junction.  (B L D)

Day 5

Today we travel to the Quobba Blowholes, a truly wonderful sight of our rugged Western Australian coast line and then onto the Carnarvon. We visit the town jetty,  town and wharf area., before arriving at our accommodation. (B,D)

Day 6

We visit the tracking station (set up by NASA to support the Gemini and Apollo space programs), and the OTC Satellite Earth Station Carnarvon. Later we continue to Kalbarri National Park  where we visit the new impressive Skywalk. (B,D)

Day 7

Departing Kalbarri, we take George Grey Drive and pull into Bluff Point to view the spectacular coastline. We arrive in Northampton for our morning tea break and then a stop in Geraldton; but first we visit the HMAS Sydney memorial before our lunch break. Passing through Dongara, we travel the new Indian Ocean Drive, with an afternoon stop before arriving in Perth, after a very enjoyable and interesting tour of some our beautiful state. (B)
