Mount Augustus, for all its isolation, is one of the true wonders of Australia and the largest rock on the planet. The local Wajarri Aboriginal people called the mountain “Burringurrah”. Walga Rock is a huge monolith, where you can see the largest gallery of Aboriginal rock paintings in Western Australia. Explore the cave, which contains a range of paintings.
Departing Perth, we travel through the Swan Valley and Bindoon to Dalwallinu, then on to the settlement of Paynes Find and Mt Magnet, spotting carpets of everlasting on the sides of the road on the way. We arrive at Cue, our overnight stop. (D)
On to Meekatharra where we take the dirt road to Mt Augustus, stopping at Murchison River to collect firewood for our campfire tonight. We continue to Mt Gould, heritage site of one of WA’s oldest police stations; and Landor Racetrack, where races have been held since 1929, arriving at Mt Augustus resort/station in the afternoon for our two-night stay. Today is all about Mt Augustus, Lyons River and Cattle Pool, where we have morning tea, a swim, and a look at Aboriginal art and rock formations. Free time to relax in the afternoon then later we enjoy champagne and nibbles whilst we watch the sun go down on the largest rock in the world. We finish the day with our evening meal around the campfire. (B,L,D)
We say goodbye to Mt Augustus and make our way to the ruins of Big Bell, then Walga Rock, the second largest monolith in Australia (5 km around the base and 1.5 km long). We have a bush BBQ here then head to Cue for the night. (B,L,D)
On to Yalgoo for morning tea and a visit to Jokers Tunnel, which was carved though solid rock by early gold prospectors. We arrive at Wubin for lunch before continuing our journey, arriving back in Perth in the late afternoon. (B)
