The perfect art holiday – cruising in a houseboat, gentle water, towering cliffs, variety of flora and fauna, small group, scrumptious meals, and more…!
Terry Jarvis is one of Australia’s exceptional watercolour Artists. His passion for his craft and his love of the wonderful medium of watercolour is revealed through his varied subject matter ranging from magnificent Australian Scenes, to paintings of his travels in Australia and Europe. He is a much sought after watercolour tutor across the globe and has been a regular tutor at the legendary Bathurst summer and winter schools for the last 6 years.
After arriving in Adelaide, you are transferred to Murray Bridge to begin your art and nature-lovers cruise. Tonight there’s a pre-dinner drink for everyone to get to know one another, before a delicious hot dinner. (Dinner provided)
After a cooked breakfast, Terry will commence with a lesson on the basics of capturing your surroundings, how to mix Australian greens, perspective, and tonal values. We stop for a painting opportunity on land during the day and put the lesson into practise under Terry’s guidance. Lunch is served on board and you can continue to paint as we meander upriver to Mannum, a very historic town on the west bank. Mannum played a significant role in the development of South Australia. Captain William Randell launched the first Paddle Steamer, the “Mary Ann”, on the Murray River in 1853. By late 1880’s, there were over 250 paddle steamers and barges trading on the River Murray, and Mannum became an industrious inland port. You can paint on land here or just stay on board and paint from the deck. Purchase your own dinner tonight at the Pretoria Hotel, just a few metres away from our houseboat. We moor in Mannum for the night. (Breakfast and lunch included)
After breakfast and a lesson on skies, cliffs and trees, we continue to cruise upriver and put the lesson into practise. Terry will provide one-one-one tips and instruction if you need it. We will pass huge lagoons teeming with birdlife. During floods, these inland lagoons were so immense that in the early riverboat days, captains could not find true channels. In the early 1900’s riverboat captains planted willow trees along the banks to clearly mark the main river channel. Today the willows provide the perfect haven for the prolific birdlife. We stop along the way to spend time on land and capture some of this beautiful scenery. We continue cruising past Younghusband, Teal Flat, lovely Lake Carlet, and moor at the little settlement of Bowhill. Continue painting on board or you can stretch your legs with a walk and sketch on land. Tonight before dinner we have a show-and-tell of sketches we’ve created so far which is a great way to learn from one another and for Terry to provide further tips and suggestions. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provied)
We depart Bowhill and head back downstream. Terry will provide a lesson on water and reflections which will help you sketch those special water scenes on this cruise. We spend time on land, capturing more of the beauty of the Murray River, paying attention to reflections from the boat and our surroundings, water colours, ripples and shapes. We moor at the small settlement of Younghusband with its riverside shacks, picturesque views and abundant birdlife. It will be hard to choose what to sketch! (B,L,D)
After breakfast, Terry will give a short lesson on adding birds to your sketches. If you haven’t already put a bird in your scenes, today is the day! You will learn how to draw and paint feathers, feet, beaks and more. This lesson will be invaluable if you want to add life to any future sketch or painting! We meander past Mannum and moor at a picturesque painting spot. Time to stretch your legs and find your “spot” to create your masterpiece! There are some 320 species of birdlife in the Murray River area. See how many you can spot! This evening we have a traditional Australian barbecue on board followed by entertainment provided by your crew. Uh oh – what do they have planned! (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided)
After a scrumptious cooked breakfast, we have time for more sketching under Terry’s guidance. We continue to cruise past the never-ending delights of the Murray River, capturing more of its beauty on paper. Later Terry will show you how to paint a sunset (before the sun goes down). You’ll get a chance to paint your own sunset right after that as we watch our last sunset on the Mighty Murray! More show-and-tell of our work tonight after our last dinner together. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided)
Today we return to Murray Bridge and leave our houseboat behind. We drive to the German settlement of Hahndorf which is classified as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement and the jewel of the Adelaide Hills. The most striking features that greet visitors are the over 100-year-old elm and plane trees that line the Main street and the original ‘Fachwerk’ buildings, many beautifully maintained or restored to original conditions. Hahndorf has a unique ‘village feel’ about it and the Main Street is lined with eateries, souvenir and gift shops, clothing and leather goods and craft outlets and galleries. You will have time for lunch and shopping before your transfer to the airport for your flight home, taking some wonderful memories with you. (Breakfast included)
