Mt Augustus / Walga Rock at Wildflower Time

Our outback adventure begins as we leave Perth behind and journey through the picturesque Swan Valley along the historic Great Northern Highway. After morning tea in the country town of Bindoon, we continue north through endless wheat and sheep country, where wide horizons and open skies set the rhythm of the day. Lunch is enjoyed in Dalwallinu before we travel onwards via Paynes Find. At this time of year, the roadsides can burst into colour with dazzling carpets of everlastings, transforming the outback into a living painting. By evening we arrive in the historic gold mining town of Cue, our overnight stop beneath the stars. (D)

This morning we travel to Meekatharra before venturing onto the red dirt roads that lead deep into the heart of the outback and towards the mighty Mount Augustus. Along the way we pause beside the tranquil Murchison River, a haven for birdlife, native flora and peaceful reflections. We also visit the heritage ruins of Mount Gould Police Station, one of WA’s oldest police stations dating back to 1880, where weathered stone walls whisper stories of the early frontier days. At the legendary Landor Racecourse, where races have been held since 1929, we stretch our legs and soak up a little authentic outback spirit before continuing to our destination. By late afternoon the immense silhouette of Mount Augustus rises before us as we arrive at our accommodation for a memorable two-night stay. (B,D)

Today belongs to the giant. Rising dramatically from the surrounding plains, Mount Augustus is one of Australia’s most extraordinary natural wonders and the largest monolith on Earth. We explore this ancient landscape, visiting the beautiful Lyons River and peaceful Cattle Pool, where magnificent river gums shelter birdlife and native animals. Morning tea here feels wonderfully timeless. Around the rock itself we discover fascinating Aboriginal rock art, rugged gorges and astonishing geological formations sculpted over millions of years. The afternoon is yours to relax, explore or simply absorb the silence and scale of the outback. As evening falls, we gather for sunset drinks and nibbles while the great rock glows fiery red beneath the fading light. Later, dinner and laughter around the campfire create the perfect ending to an unforgettable day beneath a sky crowded with stars. (B,L,D)

Farewell to Mount Augustus as we begin our journey south, travelling through landscapes rich in mining and pastoral history. We visit the haunting ruins of Big Bell, once a thriving gold mining town now reclaimed by the outback. Later we arrive at remarkable Walga Rock, Australia’s second largest monolith. This immense granite formation stretches for kilometres and holds deep cultural significance, featuring one of Western Australia’s most impressive collections of Aboriginal rock art hidden within its vast rock shelter. By late afternoon we return to the heritage town of Cue for our overnight stay. (B,D)

This morning we begin our journey back to Perth, travelling south through the ever-changing landscapes of the Mid West. Along the way we stop for morning tea and lunch, sharing stories and favourite moments from our outback escape before arriving back in Perth late afternoon, carrying memories of ancient rocks, endless skies and the timeless beauty of Western Australia’s inland heart.
