If you've never visited Australia's "red centre" then you haven't really seen the most remarkable part of our country. We have put together two tours this year that take you to the red centre - Great Central Road (Perth to Adelaide) 01 to 13 May 2020; and Adelaide to the Red Centre 18 to 27 May 2020 - and here are seven good reasons why you must go: HUGE rocks! Uluru and Kata Tjuta (also known as Ayers Rock and The Olgas) are two of the most visited icons of Australia. Not just because of their sheer size but also the spiritual presence about them. We can't think of anyone who has seen these amazing formations and not been mesmerized by them. Canyons, gaps, gorges and ranges! Kings Canyon, Trephina Gorge, Simpsons Gap, and the MacDonnell Ranges are gloriously picturesque. Your camera won't stop clicking! Quartzite cliffs, sandy creek beds, red river gums, and waterholes that attract native wildlife are just some of the sights you'll see. Relevant history that paved Australia's future. We visit Giles weather station, named after the famous explorer Ernest Giles;  Alice Springs Telegraph Station, the original site for the first European settlement in central Australia; Coober Pedy, the most multicultural town in Australia famous for its opals; and Woomera, one of the most secret allied establishments in operation during the Cold War. If you have never visited Mt Augustus or Walga Rock, then you have missed something quite spectacular. These two rocks are situated in the mid-west of Western Australia, and they have their very own significance and awe-inspiring presence. Mt Augustus lies 353 km north-west of Meekatharra. It rises 715m above the surrounding alluvial plain, and is an inselberg,  which means ‘island mountain’. It is 8 km long, 49 km in circumference, and it is some 1,000 million years old. Mt Augustus is partly covered in vegetation, but there is plenty of rock to be seen too, including great rock formations with a myriad of red and ochre colours that have been created over time. Around the rock you can find rocky creeks, gorges and open plains supporting a variety of vegetation and wildlife.  It’s a peaceful place, where one can enjoy an unspoiled presence, viewing aboriginal art sites, setting off on walk trails, enjoying various lookouts over the surrounding area, and sitting by the gentle Cattle Pool (which is full of water year around). Walga Rock quietly sleeps amongst the arid landscape 49 km west of Cue. It is five kilometres in diameter, 1.5 kilometres in length, and one of the largest granite monoliths in Australia. It is an easy climb to the top, taking approximately ten minutes, where you are rewarded with spectacular 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. At ground level and in the shade, you will also see a large gallery of aboriginal art (it is also the location of the unique cave art representation of a European sailing ship)! With the good rains that we've had this winter, it's going to be a great wildflower season. In the coming months Aussie Redback Tours will be taking advantage of this during a number of their tours, starting with the five-day Cue-Walga Rock-Kalbarri tour, departing Perth on 25 August 2019. The tour will take you through the Murchison area, visiting the historic town of Cue (once the centre of the Murchison Goldfields); Walga Rock (claimed to be the second largest monolith in Australia, which contains a cave with an extensive gallery of indigenous art); and the very popular seaside tourist town of Kalbarri. Aussie Redback Tours pride themselves in going the extra mile for their passengers, and there will be ample side trips and stops along the way on this tour for wildflower spotting. In September, we will be off again on our annual Four-day Northern Wildflowers tour, departing Perth on 22 September 2019. This tour takes in the beauty of the northern wildflower areas of WA, spotting the elusive wreath flower, carpets of everlastings, blue leschenaultia and more. One of the stops is at Coalseam Conservation Park which is known for its carpets of everlastings. And following that tour is the 10-day Mt Augustus/Karijini tour, departing Perth on 01 October 2019. This tour travels through classic outback territory to Mt Augustus, the world's largest single rock (bigger than Uluru), and Karijini National Park with its spectacular gorges, creeks and chasms. The return trip follows the coast through the beautiful towns of Coral Bay, Carnarvon and Kalbarri.
